Starting from 10th on the grid, Didier Pironi handled an exceptionally demanding race with great effectiveness as the circuit evolved from soaking wet to progressively drier conditions. He brought his Tyrrell home on the podium in the final Grand Prix of the season, securing his second podium finish of 1979. A notable performance for the 009 against the Ferrari, Renault and Williams machinery of this Formula One era.
